Iceland joins Eurocontrol, enhancing European aviation

On 1st January 2025, Iceland officially became the 42nd member of Eurocontrol, marking the first new accession in a decade since Estonia in 2015. This membership highlights Iceland’s critical role as a key air navigation hub at the crossroads of continents, following over 25 years of observer participation in the provisional council.
Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, helps manage and coordinate air traffic across Europe. With 42 member states, it ensures millions of flights move safely and efficiently each year through careful planning, managing air traffic flow, and operational support.
Eurocontrol director general Raúl Medina praised the collaboration leading to this milestone, calling it “excellent news for the European aviation network.” Icelandic Transport Authority director general Jón Gunnar Jónsson described the move as a “logical step”, emphasising the nation’s strategic aviation importance.
