The aviation industry is rapidly advancing toward decarbonisation, driven by the EU’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate.

Starting in 2025, flights departing from EU airports must use at least 2% SAF, increasing to 70% by 2050.

SAF, derived from waste products like such as cooking oils, reduces lifecycle CO2 emissions by over 80% while working seamlessly with current jet engines. Companies, such as Moeve, are stepping up with investments like a €1.2 billion biofuel facility in Spain, expected to prevent 3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Looking ahead, e-fuels—produced using green hydrogen and captured CO2—will supplement SAF as feedstock supplies tighten. These technologies, supported by the EU’s Refuel Aviation initiative, aim to fully decarbonise the sector while enhancing Europe’s energy independence.

Myles Corey, founder of Spaero, says:

“Cleaner fuels are the future of flying, and it’s exciting to see the industry taking real steps forward.”
