Ultra-low cost carrier Wizz Air has been honoured with the Best Airline for Carbon Reduction Award at the inaugural Carbon Awards 2024, hosted by World Finance.

This accolade acknowledges Wizz Air’s impactful decarbonisation efforts, including the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and operating one of the youngest and most efficient fleets in the industry.

The airline’s modern Airbus A321neo aircraft reduces fuel burn by around 20% compared to older models, setting a benchmark for sustainability in aviation.

Monika Wojcik, Head of Special Projects at World Finance, highlighted Wizz Air’s innovative fuel-saving measures, including single-engine taxiing, fully electric ground handling operations, and use of ground power units. These efforts have significantly reduced CO₂ emissions by up to 80–85% per aircraft compared to traditional diesel-powered methods.

Myles Corey, founder of Spaero, said of the achievement: “This recognition reflects how airlines are beginning to tackle the challenges of decarbonisation in tangible ways. While Wizz Air’s efforts are commendable, they also underline how much work remains across the industry to meet long-term sustainability goals.”
